The Mouse Mutant Resource

The Mouse Mutant Resource (MMR) is the primary repository at The Jackson Laboratory of strains and stocks carrying spontaneous genetic mutations. The MMR performs three vital functions:

  • Characterization of new spontaneous mutations in mice that occur within the large breeding colonies of The Jackson Laboratory
  • Maintenance and distribution of established mutant stocks
  • Preservation of spontaneous mutation stocks

Over 270 established mutant stocks are maintained in the Mouse Mutant Resource and 60-70 new mutations are at various stages of characterization. New mutant mice are made available to the scientific community once they have been characterized and described in journal publications.

Stock Availability Information

MMR stocks are included in the JAX® Mice Catalogue, which can be searched by gene name, strain name, stock number, strain type, or research area. Mice from MMR stocks are available as breeding pairs or in small numbers (JAX® Mice Level 4).

Stocks that are temporarily not in demand are discontinued as breeding colonies. Most stocks are cryopreserved as embryos prior to their removal from the breeding colony. DNA is always preserved from all stocks and is available from the DNA Resource.

Funding Sources

The Mouse Mutant Resource is supported by a National Institutes of Health grant,  The Jackson Laboratory institutional funds, and fees from the sale and distribution of mice. Primary support comes from NIH-NCRR grant RR01183 . In publications on mice from our resource, please cite the Mouse Mutant Resource and this grant for providing the mice.

Celebrating 50 years

For 50 years, the Lab has maintained the world’s largest collection of laboratory mice with naturally occurring, spontaneous mutations.

This unique repository has a long history of helping researchers around the world better understand the genetic basis of diabetes, obesity, heart disease, neurological disorders and an array of other human diseases.
